| A particulary moving reflection from fellow Knight BK Pat Carnevale Today's readings 7/3/09 Eph.2:19-22; Ps.117:1-2; Jn.20:24-29 After Jesus has risen from the dead His followers had a hard time recognizing Him at first. Mary Magdalene didn't recognize Him when He appeared to her and she thought He was the gardener(Jn.20:15), the unnamed disciples didn't recognize Him on the road to Emmaus(Lk.24:15-16), and neither did the group gathered in the upper room when He appeared to them and they thought He was a ghost. We even see it in the ones who knew Him best as they were fishing on the Sea of Tiberius(Jn.21:4), and so it really shouldn't surprise us when we fail to recognize Jesus when we encounter Him today. I say that because we encounter Christ every day in the body of believers we call the church, something St.Paul tries to point out to us in today's first reading. There is more to the overall scheme of things than the tiny little world we call our personal lives, we are part of something much larger with "Christ Himself as the Capstone", therefore every believer, no matter how incomplete and frail their faith may be, is an important part of that "sacred temple" St.Paul refers to. An important part of this scripture ministry God has blessed me with is the daily devotional "Living Faith" where I get the readings for the day from, and this reflection today is a good example of one part of the Body of Christ building up another. Leave it to an IHM sister to once again open my eyes to a truth I never fully recognized before, the fact that we see a very real and touchable Christ in His suffering every day. We see and touch Him in the homeless man on the corner, in the unemployed and uneducated as well as in those who suffer from physical and emotional pain, and we don't even recognize Him at all. We really are a lot like our beloved St.Thomas whose feast we celebrate today, we want to see a clear and irrefutable Jesus we can reach out and touch in order to believe He is among us, and the sad reality is God gives that to us every day and we just don't take advantage it. It took the insightful words of Sister Chris Koelhoffer's reflection on today's Gospel to get me to open my eyes and recognize Jesus looking back at me in all the suffering people I encounter every day, and so it is very clear to me that those IHM sisters who taught me back in grade school are still very much a part of my "temple" today. Yes, when God builds something it lasts an eternity because it's foundation is the Eternal Wisdom that is essence of Himself, and the amazing thing is our faith makes each one of us a "member" of that Body! So look around, my friends, because if you need to see nail marks and put your hand into Christ's Side I can assure you God gives all of us the opportunity to do just that every day. Jesus is very much a part of our personal world, we just need to open our minds and hearts and not just our eyes to see Him. God bless you, In Jesus - Pat |
